Ethics in Scientific Research

Course description

Conducting research is an enthralling but challenging activity that involves very different ethical issues, such as bias, fraud, plagiarism, conflicts of interest, falsification of research results, informed consent, attribution of authorship and adequacy of peer review publication processes. Through a combination of theory and practice during this course, students will critically analyze research ethics topics and case studies and learn how to manage and evaluate a research project, all the way from design to publication, from an ethical standpoint. By understanding and critically debating research ethics-specific issues, students will integrate the importance of scientific integrity while acquiring key reasoning skills that will significantly increase the scientific quality and impact of their future research.

At the end of the course, participants should: –

  • be able to describe and apply theories and methods in ethics and research ethics
  • be able to acquire an overview of important issues in research ethics, like responsibility for research, ethical vetting, and scientific misconduct.
  • Be able to present arguments and results of ethical inquiries.

  • Fundamentals of Ethics and Bioethics
  • Research Ethics (Paradigm Research Ethics cases) background
  • How to handle data. 
  • Good research practice, research integrity, and Scientific Misconduct
  • Responsibility for the results of research
  • Ethical vetting of research
  • Conflicts of interest and Publishing biases
  • Ethical Planning and Conduction of a Research Project
Target group

The course will benefit a diverse range of learners including Masters and Ph.D. students as well as early-career researchers and more senior colleagues with some experience.

Training methods

This course will be available on face-to-face and Online. It will encompass specific facilitator inputs (e.g. lecture presentations), combined with a variety of interactive learning activities, including structured group work, demonstrations, group and individual reflection, role plays, self-study and writing, and plenary discussions

Mode of assessment

The course will be assessed using pre and post-tests, continuous progressive tests, presentations, and group discussions

Award

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a certificate from Uganda Christian University.

Training venue

The training will be conducted at UCU School of Medicine campus Mengo or any other venue communicated in advance.

Payment

A training fee of UGX 350,000 will be charged for the course. This covers tuition fees, learning materials, and training venue. Payment should be sent to our bank account before the start of training and proof of payment sent to ucusom@admin.ucu.ac.ug NOTE: Foreign currencies will be converted using prevailing forex rates.
