Emergency Medicine

Course description

Emergency Medicine is a medical specialty—a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical and behavioral disorders. This course will further incorporate an understanding of the development of pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency medical systems and the skills necessary for this development

Target group

This course targets Doctors, nurses, and paramedics who work in Emergency Departments (Casualty Departments) on a regular or ad hoc basis, rural practitioners who have to rely heavily on their clinical skills to diagnose serious conditions, any health care practitioner interested in improving his or her clinical and diagnostic skills. It also targets emergency physicians generally practicing in hospital emergency departments, pre-hospital settings via emergency medical services, and intensive care units, but may work in Primary care settings such as urgent care clinics. Sub-specializations of hyperbaric medicine, sports medicine, palliative care, or aerospace medicine.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: –

  • Identify an emergency
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Perform life-saving emergency procedures
  • Safely transport an emergency victim

Course content

This course will cover the following modules:

  • The Emergency Department as an error-prone environment (Including equipment)
  • Identification and mitigation of emergency cases
  • Written formulation of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Medical mistakes
  • Clinical reasoning
  • High-risk presentations
  • High-risk patients
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Safety in triage, disposition, and discharge
  • Transport of an accident victim
Training methods

This course will be available on face-to-face and Online. It will encompass specific facilitator inputs (e.g. lecture presentations), combined with a variety of interactive learning activities, including structured group work, demonstrations, group and individual reflection, role plays, self-study and writing, and plenary discussions

Mode of assessment

The course will be assessed using pre and post-tests, continuous progressive tests, presentations, and group discussions

Award

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a certificate from Uganda Christian University.

Training venue

The training will be conducted at UCU School of Medicine campus Mengo or any other venue communicated in advance.

Payment

A training fee of UGX 350,000 will be charged for the course. This covers tuition fees, learning materials, and training venue. Payment should be sent to our bank account before the start of training and proof of payment sent to UCUSoM@admin.ucu.ac.ug NOTE: Foreign currencies will be converted using prevailing forex rates.
