Uganda Christian University (UCU) is among the institutions taking centre stage at the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) Exhibition 2026, held in Gulu City. Themed “Harnessing Innovation for Accelerated Economic Transformation,” the three-day event has drawn universities and tertiary institutions from across the country, offering a national platform for academic research, student innovation, and policy dialogue on the future of higher education in Uganda. For UCU, it is an opportunity to demonstrate the university’s growing role as an engine of innovation, and to present homegrown solutions to the challenges facing Ugandan communities.

UCU at the Exhibition

At its dedicated exhibition space, UCU students and staff are presenting projects that cut across a wide spectrum of disciplines; including Law, Computing, Journalism, Agriculture, Nursing, Engineering, Education, Business, and Visual Arts. The exhibits range from technology-driven applications to community-based interventions, each representing a potentially transformative response to real-world challenges facing Ugandan society.

University officials led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, noted that the exhibition gives UCU students a valuable opportunity to demonstrate not only the depth of their academic knowledge, but also their capacity to apply that knowledge in addressing pressing societal needs.

The diversity of disciplines represented at UCU’s stand reflects the university’s holistic approach to education, one that nurtures not just technical expertise but a sense of civic responsibility among its students. Visitors to the stand have engaged with student presenters, explored prototypes, and had the opportunity to ask questions about the practical applications and scalability of the showcased solutions. For many of the students, it is their first time presenting their work to a national audience, and the experience has been both affirming and motivating.

Leadership Calls for Solution-Oriented Education

The exhibition was officially opened by Uganda’s State Minister for Higher Education, Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo, who challenged universities to shift their focus beyond theoretical instruction toward practical, solution-oriented education that aligns with national development priorities.

“Research should not remain in libraries. It must be translated into innovations and products that can transform communities and drive economic growth,” Hon. Muyingo told participants.

NCHE Executive Director, Prof. Mary J. N. Okwakol, echoed this call, noting that the exhibition is part of broader, ongoing efforts to strengthen the relevance and responsiveness of higher education in Uganda. She stressed the need for institutions to prioritise competence-based learning and to build stronger, more structured partnerships with industry, ensuring that graduates enter the workforce with employable, applicable skills that meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy.

“There is increasing recognition that higher education must move beyond theory to practical solutions that address national and regional challenges,” Prof. Okwakol said, while also acknowledging that limited funding continues to hinder the commercialisation of innovations developed within universities.

Bridging Academia, Government, and Industry

Representing the NCHE Council, Mr. Ramadhan Mugalu described the exhibition as a vital forum for interaction between academia, government, and the public. “Universities are not just centres of learning but key drivers of innovation and economic transformation,” he said, reinforcing the view that higher education institutions must take an active role in shaping Uganda’s development trajectory.

Firmly established as a key event on Uganda’s higher education calendar, the NCHE Exhibition continues to bring together policymakers, academics, students, industry players, and communities to explore how research and innovation can be harnessed to support national development goals. UCU’s participation underscores the university’s commitment to being at the forefront of that conversation, translating faith, knowledge, and creativity into solutions that matter.

As the exhibition draws to a close, UCU’s presence stands as a testament to what becomes possible when students are empowered to think critically, act creatively, and serve purposefully. The university looks forward to continued collaboration with NCHE and other stakeholders in strengthening Uganda’s higher education ecosystem and advancing innovation that uplifts communities across the country.
