Uganda Christian University

Uganda Christian University (UCU) today, 30 September held a Staff Excellence Performance Award ceremony at Nkoyoyo Hall during community worship, organized by the Directorate of Human Resource and Administration. The event recognized a total of 30 outstanding staff members who have gone above and beyond their traditional job descriptions, distinguishing themselves in service, research, grant writing, and administration.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Mr. David Mugawe, said the idea of the awards was born two years ago when the Human Resources Board and University Council tasked management to find ways of recognizing staff who go beyond their traditional job descriptions. According to him, the initiative is meant to “recognize and motivate those who go the extra mile.”

The inaugural ceremony was held last year, and this year’s edition broadened the recognition to multiple disciplines. Mr Mugawe explained that a committee was formed to set parameters for evaluation. Among these was grant writing, an area the university is keen to encourage as it seeks income sources beyond tuition. “One of those avenues is grants, and today we are recognizing members who have distinguished themselves in this area,” he said.

Research was another focus, with staff honored for publishing beyond the minimum requirements for their academic ranks. In addition, Mr Mugawe noted that excellence in teaching, student service, online learning, and student assessment feedback were considered. Administrative staff were also recognized for outstanding contributions, particularly in customer care and innovation.

UCU VC
Prof Mushengyezi urged staff to embrace excellence in their daily work and life experiences.

The Vice Chancellor Canon. Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi praised the staff for their outstanding contributions, noting that the awards were an opportunity to celebrate those who go the extra mile in their work. He reminded the audience that while all staff are valued, “there are always those that stand out in the way they do their work.” With a touch of humor, he remarked that he himself had not received an award, joking that he “needed to pull up his socks.”

Prof. Mushengyezi also emphasized the link between staff excellence and the university’s broader mission. He said UCU’s vision to be a Centre of Excellence in the Heart of Africa requires more than words or sermons: “It has to be a daily lived experience, starting from where you are deployed.
