UCU to host AUUS Games 16th Dec 2023
Uganda Christian University (UCU) has expressed readiness to host Inter-University games that will

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has officially stepped up preparations for the 2026 Uganda Martyrs’ Day, following a high-level planning meeting held at the Anglican Shrine in Namugongo on March 17.
The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. John M. Kitayimbwa, brought together key stakeholders — including university officials, engineers, and the communications team — to align strategies ahead of the national event.
Addressing the gathering, Rev. Prof. Kitayimbwa stressed the importance of structured planning, calling on all committees to present clear and actionable strategies before execution begins.
“We must ensure that every committee has a well-defined plan and budget to guide the preparations for this important national and spiritual event,” he said.
Committees were subsequently tasked with developing detailed budgets and outlining their operational plans, covering logistics, infrastructure, and data collection to help the government estimate the expected number of pilgrims.
Following the strategic planning session, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, announced the commissioning of renovation works at the Anglican site.
“We have handed over the site to contractors to undertake preservation works, painting, new construction, walkways, and improvements in lighting,” he said.
The project also includes the construction of modern sanitation facilities, aimed at enhancing the experience of pilgrims. The works are scheduled for completion by the end of April, with May set aside for final clean-up and readiness activities.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, David Mugawe, revealed that the government has committed approximately UGX 2 billion through a national organising committee that brings together both Anglican and Catholic representatives. However, he noted that this falls short of what is required, with total budget estimates expected to reach approximately UGX 4 billion.
Organisers announced that the celebrations will span an entire week, featuring Youth Day, Women’s Day, Men’s Day, and Children’s Day in the lead-up to the main event on June 3. While around 5,000 pilgrims are expected on the main day, an estimated 10,000 people could participate in activities throughout the week.
Uganda Martyrs’ Day commemorates 45 Christian converts — both Catholic and Anglican — who were executed between 1885 and 1887 under Kabaka Mwanga II for refusing to renounce their faith. The annual pilgrimage to Namugongo draws thousands of believers from across Uganda and beyond, making it one of the country’s most significant religious and cultural events.
UCU’s leadership has called on partners, companies, and well-wishers to support the preparations and help ensure a successful and dignified commemoration.
