Uganda Christian University (UCU) has taken a significant step towards strengthening Pan-African academic collaboration by entering into discussions with Ashesi University, Ghana, on the development of a joint graduate programme in Advanced Studies in Mechatronics Engineering (Intelligent Computer Systems).

Officials from UCU’s Directorate of Research and Partnerships and the Department of Computing and Technology hosted a delegation from Ashesi University to explore the proposed programme, which would combine the strengths of both institutions in engineering education, research, and innovation.

The proposed partnership centres on several key areas of collaboration. At its core, the initiative will involve joint research and curriculum development, enabling both universities to pool expertise in mechatronics, intelligent systems, and related fields. Staff and student exchange opportunities will further enrich the programme by fostering cross-cultural learning and broadening technical perspectives for participants at both institutions.

During their visit, the Ashesi delegation toured UCU’s innovation spaces, where they observed advanced student projects in robotics and mechatronics. The tour offered a first-hand look at the practical, hands-on engineering culture that UCU has cultivated and showed the university’s readiness to support a graduate-level programme in this discipline.

UCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasising the importance of building robust Pan-African university networks. Prof. Mushengyezi noted that partnerships of this kind are essential for positioning African universities as leaders in science, technology, and engineering education on the global stage.

This engagement forms part of The Education Collaborative, a growing movement dedicated to institutional partnership and shared academic growth across Africa. By connecting universities around common goals, the Collaborative aims to accelerate innovation, improve educational outcomes, and prepare the next generation of African professionals for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

UCU remains committed to fostering collaborations that advance continental academic excellence and equip students with the skills to lead in an increasingly technology-driven world. Further updates on the progress of this partnership will be shared in due course.
