Barriers and Enablers to University–Industry Collaboration: Perspectives from Academic and Industry Professionals.
This study aimed to develop a model for enhancing university-industry collaboration (UIC) between Uganda Christian University (UCU) and industrial establishments in Mukono Municipality, addressing barriers and enablers to effective partnerships. It investigates how UIC can foster knowledge exchange and socio-economic development in a resource-constrained African context, guided by Rybnicek and Königsgruber’s (2018) UIC framework. A qualitative case study design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 21 participants (academic staff and industry professionals). Data were analyzed thematically, informed by General Systems Theory, Collaborative Control Theory, and the UIC model, to identify key collaboration dynamics. Five themes emerged: Nature of Collaborations (e.g., informal, internship-focused interactions); Management Structures and Platforms (weak governance); Stakeholder Capacity and Readiness (under-resourcing); Information Exchange and Dissemination (limited channels); and Impact and Sustainability (constrained long-term outcomes). These highlight systemic barriers like poor coordination and resource scarcity, alongside opportunities for structured partnerships. The proposed UIC model offers actionable strategies for universities and industries to strengthen governance, formalize interactions, and enhance resource allocation, promoting innovation and community engagement in Uganda. This study fills a gap in UIC literature by providing a context-specific model for private African universities, contributing to theoretical and practical advancements in knowledge exchange and economic development.
