Uganda Christian University (UCU), through the School of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMC), is set to host the prestigious 3rd International CoMMPASS Conference from February 2nd to 6th, 2026, at the Main Campus in Mukono.

Under the theme “Media, Migration & Mobility: Reimagining the African Narrative,” this five-day event marks a significant milestone for the CoMMPASS Project (Communicating Migration and Mobility – E-Learning Programs and Newsroom Applications for Sub-Saharan Africa). Funded by the European Union, the project is a collaborative effort between a consortium of eight universities across Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.

Redefining the Story of Africa

At a time when the media industry is striving to tell a more authentic “African story” regarding migration, this conference serves as a vital platform for journalists, students, educators, and policymakers. The event aims to bridge the gap between academic training and real-world newsroom applications to improve the quality of public discourse on migration.

Conference Highlights

Attendees can look forward to a comprehensive program that includes:

  • MOOC Results: Sharing the outcomes of the first-ever Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Reporting Migration.
  • Awards & Recognition: Honoring excellence in migration reporting among professional journalists and students from Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strategic Launches: The official launch of partnerships with The African Journalism Education Network (AJEN) and the African Journalism Students’ Network (AJSN).
  • Keynote Address: Insights from renowned scholar Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, focusing on empowering African narratives through digital storytelling and innovative journalism.

About the CoMMPASS Project

Since its inception in 2023, the CoMMPASS project has been at the forefront of digital transformation in higher education. By developing curriculum in four key languages (English, French, Portuguese, and Kiswahili), the project has trained over 100 researchers and 1,500 students and professionals.

The consortium includes partner universities from Uganda, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Germany, and Portugal, alongside associated partners from across the continent and global bodies like UNESCO and the World Journalism Education Council.
