MUKONO — Uganda Christian University (UCU) has commissioned the tarmacking of the Sports Avenue Road, a 280-metre stretch below the Janani Luwum Dining Hall whose completion will render the Mukono main campus entirely dust-free.
The project was commissioned on Monday, 3 August 2026, by the Rt. Rev. Prof. Alfred Olwa, Chairperson of the University Council, who was joined by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Mr. David Mugawe, and other members of University Management. Works begin immediately.
Modest in length, the Sports Avenue Road carries a significant share of daily campus traffic. It functions as a major access route linking students’ halls of residence to the academic, administrative and recreational areas of the University, and is used continuously by pedestrians and motorists throughout the day.

Its current murram surface has long been the last significant source of dust on the inside of the main campus. Once tarmacked, the road is expected to improve mobility across the campus and enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists using the route.
The works form part of the beautification component of the Campus Transformation Initiative (2024–2030), a seven-year development programme launched in 2024 by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi.
The Initiative has progressively upgraded the physical infrastructure of all UCU campuses. At the main campus, in Mukono, the Sports Avenue Road is the last outstanding stretch in the drive toward a completely dust-free environment. Its commissioning therefore marks the closing of a chapter that began two years ago.
The works have been contracted to Exdav Technologies Limited, a Kampala-based engineering and construction firm. The company is expected to complete the project by December 2026.

In his remarks, Professor Olwa, noted that a campus environment that is clean, navigable and safe is part of the formation the University offers its students; the setting in which teaching, worship, study and community life take place.
