UCU LAW STUDENTS
Uganda Christian University (UCU) has emerged as the Overall Winner of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) National Moot Court Competition, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in partnership with the Uganda Red Cross Society.

The competition, hosted by Makerere University, brought together universities from across Uganda to test students’ knowledge, research, advocacy, and courtroom presentation skills in the field of International Humanitarian Law.

Following a rigorous preliminary round in April 2026, where more than 10 universities submitted written memorials, only four institutions qualified for the National Round held on 18 June 2026.

Representing UCU was a team of talented law students who delivered outstanding performances throughout the competition. The team comprised:

Oralists:
Nali Shakirah – Best Orator
Janessa Kirabo Namakula
Kakayi Patience Linda

Researchers:

Akatambira Sheena
Turyatunga Timothy
Mulumba Shakim
Arinaitwe Alfred

The team demonstrated exceptional legal reasoning, research excellence, and advocacy skills across three role sessions and the final oral submissions round, ultimately securing three prestigious awards:

Overall Winners Award
Best Memorial Award
Best Orator Award

The competition was adjudicated by distinguished legal professionals, including Judges of the High Court, Magistrates, representatives from the Uganda Red Cross Society, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The final round was presided over by Hon. Justice Mike Chibita of the Supreme Court of Uganda, Justice Lillian Omara of the High Court, and Justice Mohammed Mahdy Elserafy, Legal Adviser at the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Reflecting on the experience, UCU oralist Nali Shakirah shared that the competition provided an opportunity to explore a critical area of law with deep relevance to global realities.

“The competition exposed me to a new field of law, International Humanitarian Law, which is so alive to the realities of the world in wartime,” she said.

The achievement reflects Uganda Christian University’s continued commitment to excellence in legal education, practical learning, and nurturing graduates who contribute to justice, peace, and humanitarian action.

The winning team will now represent Uganda at the All Africa Rounds of the ICRC Moot Court Competition in Nairobi.
