Almost a year ago (On July 4th, 2025) at the 26th graduation ceremony, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Governing Council and top management honoured the Late Reverend. Canon Kasamba Lusaniya for his illustrious clerical ministry that has impacted thousands across the country. Today, June 18, 2026, he has gone to be with the LORD; at age 86.
A widely celebrated icon within the Anglican Community of Uganda, the Reverend Canon Kasamba was a diligent discipler, foundational mentor, educator for thousands. Notably, he was the first chaplain of Uganda Christian University.

OFFICIAL TRIBUTE
Teaching and Chaplaincy at Bishop Tucker College & Uganda Christian University (1987–2001)
Following his impactful ministry at Makerere, Rev. Kasamba joined Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono, where he lectured in Church History. When the institution transitioned into Uganda Christian University (UCU) in 1997, he became one of its founding faculty and continued to serve in dual roles, as lecturer and chaplain, until 2001.
As a teacher, Canon Kasamba had a rare gift: he brought history to life. His classes were not just academic sessions but formational experiences. He skilfully connected church history, especially that of the Anglican tradition in Uganda to contemporary ministry challenges, often using vivid illustrations, humour, and lived experience to illuminate key themes.
As Chaplain at UCU, he ministered with intentionality and warmth. His commitment to reach people in their own languages, his accessibility to students and staff, and his storytelling-based preaching style made him beloved across the campus. His chaplaincy was marked by a pastoral heart that prioritized discipleship, community, and spiritual formation.

Chaplaincy at Makerere University (1978–1987)
From 1978 to 1987, Canon Kasamba served as University Chaplain at St. Francis Chapel, Makerere University. In a politically and socially turbulent era, he emerged as a stabilizing spiritual presence, ministering to a generation of students, staff, and faculty with integrity and clarity.
His preaching was biblically grounded and pastorally sensitive—combining theological depth with engaging storytelling and humor. He offered spiritual counsel, led vibrant fellowships, and mentored young Christians, many of whom would later become leaders in church, government, and civil society. St. Francis Chapel, under his chaplaincy, became a hub of evangelical renewal, discipleship, and community transformation.
One of the people he greatly impacted, who now trains clergy had this to say:
“Rev. Canon Lusania Kasamba was a Christ-centered, faithful chaplain at Makerere, whose impactful ministry was marked by powerful yet engaging preaching, unwavering integrity, and deep commitment to discipleship. He mentored young preachers, fostered spiritual growth through student fellowships and retreats, and lived a life of simplicity, prayer, and generosity. Known for his consistent character, both in public and private, he modeled sincere Christian living, upheld financial integrity, and offered warm hospitality to students and staff alike, leaving a lasting legacy of pastoral love and authenticity.”
