UCU Wins AfroVarsity 3x3 Basketball Championship

Uganda Christian University (UCU) successfully defended its AfroVarsity 3×3 Basketball
Championship titles, with both the UCU Lady Canons and UCU Canons clinching victory against Kenya’s United States International University (USIU) in the finals held at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, from June 7–8.

The two-day tournament, organized by the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) and hosted by Makerere University, brought together top university teams from across the continent. UCU Lady Canons overcame USIU with a 19–15 win, while the UCU Canons edged their
Kenyan rivals 21–19 in a closely contested men’s final.

As winners, UCU earned the right to represent Africa at the upcoming FISU 3×3 World
University Cup, scheduled to take place in China. UCU previously qualified for the same global
tournament after defeating the University of Gold Coast in the last edition held in Xiamen,
China.
The UCU Lady Canons squad featured Sylvia Nantongo, Tracy Namugosa the Captain, Shakira
Nanvubya, and Bridget Aber. The UCU Canons were represented by team captain Daniel
Muganzi, Joel Kayiira, Flore Dushime, and Amara Ariho.
To reach the finals, the Canons edged the University of Rwanda 21–19 in a dramatic semifinal
that ended with 2:31 left on the clock. The Lady Canons, on their part, defeated Ivory Coast’s
AS INJS 20–17 to book their place in the final.

In a show of overall athletic dominance, UCU’s badminton team, the UCU Kites, also emerged champions of the FASU Badminton Games held concurrently at Makerere University’s Nkrumah Hall. The team comprising Kruthum Nalumansi, team captain Sarah Mirembe, Joshua Ekochu,

and Akram Kamoga secured victories across Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles categories.
