Medical and Health services are guided by the University Health and Safety Policy (H&SP). The policy sets out to protect and promote the health and safety of staff, students, visitors and others who are part of the UCU Community.

The aims of the policy are achieved through:

  1. Prevention and treatment of illnesses
  2. Information, dissemination and promotion of good health and safety practices
  3. Periodic inspection of University facilities
  4. Coordinated management of University activities

Allan Galpin Health Center (HC), located at the University Main Campus and the Kampala Campus Clinic offer basic diagnostic, treatment and referral services to a community of about 7000 students and close to 1500 staff and their dependents. The Health Center runs a 24 hour outpatient care facility in three shifts; day, evening and night.

The Kampala Campus clinic closes after the evening shift.

Patients with conditions beyond the capacity of the health facilities are referred to Mukono Church of Uganda (COU) Hospital, Mengo Hospital, Rubaga Hospital or Mulago National Referral Hospital. Ambulance services are available. Students pay a nominal fee for health services every semester.

Allan Galpin as part of the Health and Safety committee of the University spear heads the implementation of health promotion activities. These include planning and implementing Health Awareness Week (HAW) activities every semester, periodically developing knowledge of healthy living and strategic display of health tips to the community. Periodic inspection of residential, catering, study and work facilities by the Facilities Inspection Unit ensures a healthy and safe environment. Quality improvement activities are carried out by a committee on a regular basis.

The Health services department has a staff strength of 32, led by a Director of Medical services, one residential medical officer, an administrator, a dispenser, 13 nurses, 4 lab technicians, 3 data clerks, 2 drivers and cleaners. A volunteer physician visits the clinic twice a week.

A number of partners collaborate with the University health services. Among them are; Ministry of Health through Mukono District Health Office, Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau, Makerere-Mbarara Universities Joint AIDS Project (MJAP), Uganda Red Cross, Uganda Cancer Institute and others. The collaboration and support is in the areas of training, licensing, inspection external quality control, supplies, funding for primary health care and health promotion.
