Two-second half goals from Mercy Nabulobi and Hasifah Nassuna propelled Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals to a much fought victory over She Corporates in the FUFA Women’s Cup Championship competition in the final game played at Kabwohe Playground in Bushenyi District on Saturday 23rd June 2018. The She Corporates is a Nakawa based private organization football club.
The tournament that commenced in January 2018 saw UCU Lady Cardinals start at round sixteen by virtue of being semi finalists in last year’s tournament. Enroute to this year’s semi finals UCU Lady Cardinals beat Gafford Ladies by a two-zero goal margin and Western United by a comfortable four-zero goal margin.
UCU Lady Cardinals progressed to the final stage of the tournament after a thrilling 2 – 1 win over last year’s cup holders Olila Women FC in a match played at UCU main Campus in Mukono.
Commenting on the win, Mr. Membe Kenneth Tonny UCU Lady Cardinal’s Head Coach attributed the win to hard work and dedication by the team members. Looking back, Mr. Membe says the She Corporates team was a formidable team and that UCU Lady Cardinals win didn’t come easily.
To reach the finals, the She Corporates beat Kawempe Muslim WFC on penalty shootouts 0(4)-0(5) after a goalless a hundred and twenty (120) minutes of normal play and finally sailed through the semi finals to reach the finals with a penalty shootout after a one all draw with Muteesa I Royal University in a game played in Wankulukuku Stadium.
Individual wins and financial rewards
The Lady Cardinal’s captain Maureen Kinavudori and the goalkeeper Ruth Aturo were crowned the Most Valued Player (MVP) and The Best Goal Keeper of the tournament respectively. The winner of the tournament trophy got Shs 3 Million, the runners up got Shs 2 Million while the semi-finalists got Shs 1 Million. The individual award winners each got Shs 100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Shillings), while the fair play team of the year (Bugiri Town View) got Shs 200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Shillings.
