The government of Uganda has accredited three medical programs to be run by Uganda Christian University. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Dental Surgery are the some of the new UCU academics programs accredited by the National Council for Higher Education.

The accreditation of the above academic program is contained in a letter dated February 26, 2018 from Prof. Apuda Asibo the Executive Director National Council for Higher Education to Uganda Christian University. It announces accreditation of six new academic courses and re-accreditation of five other existing courses. The new courses are; Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Development Economics, Bachelor of Project Planning & Management, Bachelor of Public Health and Diploma in Procurement & Logistics Management.”

The academic programs that have been re-accredited are Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Economics and Management, Bachelor of Public Administration & Management, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Diploma in Project Planning Management.”

News of the accreditation of the new courses has excited the UCU community. Announcing the approval to UCU partners and Church of Uganda leaders yesterday, Vice Chancellor Rev. Canon. Dr. John Senyonyi said,

“It is with joy and utmost gratitude to God for me to announce that yesterday, Monday, March 12, we received from the National Council for Higher Education the letter of accreditation for the programmes to be offered by UCU.” He singled out Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery adding, “Henceforth UCU will be training Medical doctors and Dentists. We shall be informing you about the starting date soon.”

He hailed the role of the Church in education saying, “Church of Uganda has been at the forefront of education; she currently has the largest number of primary and secondary schools in the country. We owe it to our country, our continent and to the global family, to equip Christian medical personnel using our tested and proven Christian ethos.”
He thanked UCU partners and Church of Uganda leaders led by His Grace, the Archbishop and Chancellor of UCU The Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali saying that he was very instrumental in bringing UCU and Mengo Hospital to start the UCU School of Medicine.

Admissions to start soon

According the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Dr. Benon Musinguzi, the admission of students is now at the will of the university. “Now that we have our accreditation, any time we shall open admissions for those courses. The management will sit and decide when the new courses will start”, he said.
Dr. Musinguzi added that NCHE’s decision of accrediting the programmes shows the confidence NCHE has in Uganda Christian University. “The accreditation of the UCU school of Medicine will increase our value as a university.”
Even before it was accredited, without any solicitation or advertising the programme, we go over 200 applicants last year alone seeking to be admitted into UCU School of Medicine.
