Purpose of the Job:

Uganda Christian University (UCU) seeks to improve internal university management, information sharing and dissemination among the university stakeholders, the efficiency of the university operations, and ultimately cutting down the cost of running the university through a management information system. The acquisition of an integrated MIS is to support the UCU core functional units of Academics, Accounts and Human Resource.

Thus, the university seeks to hire a team to implement the UCU Management Information System (MIS) project. UCU MIS will provide tools that can be available to university managers for achieving higher levels of efficiency and productivity in the university operations.


The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating technical documentation related to MIS such as help documents and training materials. Technical Writer will also be known as a Content Writer, Technical Communicator, Software Documentation Expert, Technical Documentation Specialist and Instructional Designer. The documents written by the Technical Writer will serve the core purpose of transferring knowledge between the application development teams and the user teams. The information may be presented in the form of user guides or manuals for each application, reference manuals, training guides or online help incorporated into software and operating guides.

Time Frame:

The initial contract will be for six (6) months, subject to six-month extension based on satisfactory performance. The Technical Writer will work with the Project Manager to perform the assigned tasks and report to the Project Manager.

Scope and Responsibilities:

The main duties of Technical Writer include:

  1. Determine the needs of end users of technical documentation of the MIS.
  2. Study product modules and talk with the designers and developers.
  3. Work with technical staff to make products easier to use and thus need fewer instructions.
  4. Organize and write supporting documents for the modules in the MIS.
  5. Use photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation, and charts that increase users’ understanding.
  6. Select appropriate medium for message or audience, such as manuals or online videos.
  7. Gather usability feedback from customers, designers, and manufacturers.
  8. Revise documents as new issues arise.
  9. Develop and provide a monthly software project status report.
  10. Create operating instructions, how-to manuals, assembly instructions, and “frequently asked questions - FAQ” pages to help technical support staff and users.
  11. Work with MIS implementers and users to improve the end-user experience through product design changes.
  12. Any other official duties and responsibilities assigned by the Project Manager.

Key Deliverables

  • Report on the communication and reporting plan.
  • Minutes of the weekly project team meetings.
  • Project progress reports.
  • Minutes of the monthly project team and steering committee meetings.
  • Minutes of the triannual AAT and project team meetings.
  • User manuals for all the 40 modules and dashboards of the UCU MIS.
  • In app help files.

Preferred Skills:

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. A University degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field from a recognized institution.
  2. At least one (1) year of experience working in a similar context.
  3. Should have a background in systems design and implementation including knowledge and experience with systems lifecycle development methodologies.
  4. Good working knowledge of software and IT skills of MS Office applications, Javascript, HTML5, CSS, XML and databases. And multi-media skills, such as web design and video production, Adobe Creative suit, PhotoShop etc.
  5. Good working knowledge in Web portal development, any programming language (JAVA, Python, C++, C# etc.) and operating systems Windows and Linux/UNIX.
  6. Strong and effective inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of staff. The Technical Writer will spend a lot of time interacting with internal experts/developers.
  7. Possess the ability to tease out developers’ technical knowledge and put it into simplified, but not over-simplified language.
  8. Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to translate technical language into a form of words everyone can understand.

Personal Attributes

The candidate will be required to work independently or in teams. Should be result oriented. The individual should also be able to demonstrate excellent skills for communication, writing, creative thinking along with willingness to work for long hours.
