Purpose of the Job:

Uganda Christian University (UCU) seeks to improve internal university management, information sharing and dissemination among the university stakeholders, the efficiency of the university operations, and ultimately cutting down the cost of running the university through a Management Information System. The acquisition of an integrated MIS is to support the UCU core functional units of Academics, Accounts and Human Resource.

Thus, the university seeks to hire a Senior Software Developer to join our cutting-edge agile development team to work on the UCU Management Information System (MIS) project. UCU MIS will provide tools that can be available to university managers for achieving higher levels of efficiency and productivity in the university operations.

Description

The Senior Software Developer will be responsible for the design, development & integration of UCU MIS enterprise architecture software applications required to support the day to day operations and the decision-making process in line with UCU operations in academics, human resource, accounts and students’ affairs departments. Many of the required applications will be deployed for Web-based access for UCU staff and students.

Time Frame:

The initial contract will be for six (6) months, subject to six-month extension based on satisfactory performance. The Senior Software Developer will work with the Project Manager to perform the assigned tasks and report to the Project Manager. In the first six (6) months, the Senior Software Developer is expected to deliver 6 modules which will be the basis for the renewal of contract.

Scope and Responsibilities:

The main duties of Senior Software Developer include:

  1. Lead a team of 7 Software Developers on the UCU MIS project.
  2. Design and implement computer application systems, modules and any software components needed to support UCU MIS project.
  3. Develop systems and module graphical interfaces, web modules, database modules, application reports and statistics, and any software components needed to deliver complete and functional applications systems required in the UCU MIS.
  4. Perform all necessary software maintenance, including coding, testing, debugging, upgrading and modifications of software requested by the project manager.
  5. Apply software development methodologies as directed by the Project Manager to develop, implement and test systems and software components.
  6. Design, develop and implement systems and software technical specifications based on business requirements provided by UIS Manager.
  7. Develop and maintain systems and software documentation in order to facilitate maintenance and upgrade activities.
  8. Provide the necessary technical support and work on a team basis to all members of the MIS team to accomplish the software development and implementation tasks requested by the project manager.
  9. Contribute technical and professional knowledge and experience to improve UCU MIS Web Portal operations, systems integration and technical platform.
  10. Develop and provide a monthly software project status report describing the development of the above activities and any issues that may emerge, with conclusions and recommendations in regards to the UCU MIS development plan.
  11. Responsible for risk management of the overall software product.
  12. Mentor other software engineers.
  13. Any other official duties and responsibilities assigned by the Project Manager.

Preferred Skills:

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. A University degree in Computer Science or related field from a recognized institution or international professional certificate in a software developing language such as JAVA, C++, Python etc.
  2. At least six (6) years working experience as Software Developer in enterprise level projects. Should have a minimum of three (3) years experience working with Java and related technologies in production enterprise environments.
  3. Experience as a Senior Software Engineer, with the ability to mentor a development team.
  4. Extensive knowledge in web technologies and protocols, Encryption, JAVA, C++, JSON, XML, AJAX and Linux/UNIX.
  5. Front End development experience with JavaScript, HTML5, CSS and relevant web platforms and libraries (such as JavaServer Faces (JSF), AngularJS, Bootstrap, Ruby on Rails and Spring MVC).
  6. Use of Agile development practices.
  7. Ability to take ownership of the software deliverables and work unsupervised by other senior developers.
  8. Experience in developing content management systems (CMS) software and enterprise resource planning systems (ERPS).
  9. Written demonstrable professional code preferably on some enterprise level/large application(s). Proven code contribution on GitHub or any related web-based code hosting services.
  10. Proven database programming with PL SQL, SQL / Optimization (expert level), Oracle and MySQL.
  11. Mobile (Android and iOS) & GIS dev. experience is required.
  12. Experience in taking over the enhancement of code intensive applications.
  13. Experience in software integrations.
  14. Excellent coding skills and understanding of software design patterns and architecture.
  15. Strong background in systems design and implementation (UML, modelling and documentation), including knowledge and experience with systems lifecycle development methodologies.
  16. Strong and effective inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of staffs.
