Purpose of the Job:

Uganda Christian University (UCU) seeks to improve internal University management, information sharing and dissemination among the University stakeholders, the efficiency of the university operations, and ultimately cutting down the cost of running the university through a management information system. The acquisition of an integrated MIS is to support the UCU core functional units of Academics, Accounts and Human Resource.

Thus, the university seeks to hire a team to implement the UCU Management Information System (MIS) project. UCU MIS will provide tools that can be available to University managers for achieving higher levels of efficiency and productivity in the university operations.

The Software Developer will be responsible for the design, development & integration of UCU MIS enterprise architecture software applications required to support the day to day operations and the decision-making process in line with UCU operations in academics, human resource and students’ affairs departments. Many of the required applications will be deployed for Web-based access for UCU staff and students. The Software Developer will be working with the project team to develop and deliver web, desktop and mobile applications across multiple device platforms

Time Frame

The initial contract will be for six months, subject to six-month extension based on satisfactory performance. The developer will work with the project manager and the steering committee to perform the assigned tasks and report to the project manager. In the first six months, the developer is expected to deliver 6 modules which will be the basis for the renewal of contract.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  1. In coordination with the project manager, the job holder will design and implement computer application systems, modules and any software components needed to support UCU MIS project.

  2. Build prototypes of project with focus on usability features based on modules.

  3. Develop systems and module graphical interfaces, web modules, database modules, application reports and statistics, and any software components needed to deliver complete and functional applications systems required in the UCU MIS.

  4. Perform all necessary software maintenance, including coding, testing, debugging, upgrading and modifications of software requested by the project manager.

  5. Apply software development methodologies as directed by the senior developer or project manager to develop, implement and test systems and software components.

  6. Design, develop and implement systems and software technical specifications based on business requirements provided by UIS Manager.

  7. Develop and maintain systems and software documentation in order to facilitate maintenance and upgrade activities.

  8. Provide the necessary technical support and work on a team basis to all members of the MIS team to accomplish the software development and implementation tasks requested by the project manager.

  9. Contribute technical and professional knowledge and experience to improve UCU MIS Web Portal operations, systems integration and technical platform.

  10. Develop and provide a monthly software project status report describing the development of the above activities and any issues that may emerge, with conclusions and recommendations in regards to the UCU MIS development plan.

  11. Work in an agile software development environment

  12. Optimize performance of the MIS and the integrated apps.

  13. Strong and effective inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of staff.

Preferred Skills:

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. A University degree in Computer Science or related field from a recognized institution or international professional certificate in a software developing language such as JAVA, C++, Python etc.

  2. At least two (2) years working experience as Software Developer on enterprise level projects.

  3. Extensive knowledge in Web portal development, Encryption, JAVA, C++, HTML5, JSON, XML, AJAX and Linux/UNIX.

  4. Extensive knowledge in development frameworks JavaServer Faces (JSF), Angular, Bootstrap and Ruby on Rails.

  5. Experience in developing Content Management Systems (CMS) Software.

  6. The applicant must have written demonstrable professional code preferably on some enterprise level/large application(s).

  7. Proven database programming with PL SQL, SQL / Optimization (expert level), Oracle and MySQL.

  8. Proven skills in Adobe Creative suit, PhotoShop etc.

  9. Mobile & GIS dev. experience will be an added advantage.

  10. Successful applicants will have had prior experience in taking over the enhancement of code intensive applications.

  11. Applicant should have a strong background in systems design and implementation (UML, modelling and documentation), including knowledge and experience with systems lifecycle development methodologies
