We do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God (Acts 2:11)

Mission

• To promote an appreciation and understanding of all languages, particularly English and the languages of Uganda, as well as French and other regional languages.

• To provide Uganda Christian University students with excellent language skills and foster an abiding love of good writing.

• To provide education students with the skills and knowledge to become excellent teachers of languages and literature and to improve language skills in Uganda and throughout the region.

• To conduct research at a standard of excellence which ensures international recognition. To build a culture of research and enquiry at all degree levels.

• To develop and enhance language skills and critical appreciation across the Uganda Christian University community.

• To provide Christian believers, lay, ordained, missionary and local, with the linguistic means to spread the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and to communicate effectively in English and other languages.

• To place the resources of the department and the skills of its people at the disposal of Uganda Christian University, the Church of the Province of Uganda, and the Anglican Communion, that those institutions may spread the truth of the Gospel and promote their programmes and mission through effective and judicious communication.

• To promote language and literary study, so as to increase understanding across ethnic and linguistic barriers, and across historical periods.

• To foster and promote creative writing and other forms of expression and thus provide the means by which members of our community may tell their stories.

• To develop and improve courses which provide students across the University with the language skills to achieve success in their professional and personal lives. We shall achieve this generally through our writing and study skills course, and specifically through courses targeted at each faculty and department.

Vision

• To dedicate ourselves to service to God and our neighbours, sharing our skills and understanding with all who need them, and thus, to instil an ethic of service in our university community by both teaching and example.

• To combine our dedication to service with a desire for excellence, so that all staff and students may apply their God-given skills and talents in order to achieve their greatest potential

• To remain humble, that no matter what heights of service and excellence we achieve, we remain open to suggestions, questions and criticism, and remain aware that good listening is the greatest of all language skills.
