Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How long will it take me to complete the major?

Once students have been admitted to the major, they will have to spend six semesters to complete the degree requirements, this takes three years.

I want to study advertising and public relations. Which courses should I take?

Advertising and public relations are now taught under the Strategic Communication track. Taking courses like Strategic Communication and Creative Messages for Media will provide you with solid practical and theoretical training in those fields.

Can I study abroad or double major as a Journalism student?

By and large, yes. Many journalism students successfully complete a double major or a study abroad and still graduate in three years. One note: students are not allowed to double major in Journalism and any program offered through the department of Education (such as Art) or the Business department (such as Marketing, with the exception of the Certificate for Non-Business Majors).

Is there a Journalism certificate or minor?

No, not at this time.

How many faculty members are in the department of Mass Communication and Public Relations?

The School currently has 10 full- and part-time permanent faculty and instructional staff members.

Do any faculty members have professional experience in communications?

Almost all of our faculty members have significant professional experience in reporting, broadcasting, advertising/public relations or another form of communications. Many continue to use their skills professionally.

How diverse are your faculty members’ academic backgrounds?

Just as the field of Mass communication and Public Relations encompasses a widely varied base of knowledge, so does its education. Our faculty members bring a range of education into this program, from traditional journalism and communications to history, English, political psychology, sociology and more. This combination creates a strong multi-disciplinary approach that separates our program from the pack.
