Rev. Dr. Stephen Mungoma

Rev. Dr. Stephen MungomaRev. Dr. Stephen Masette Mung’oma is the first principal of UCU Mbale University College. He was born in Mbale Uganda, on April 4, 1949. While a student at Nabumali High School, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and Lord and became very active in the Christian Union. With some school mates, and with the help of a freelance evangelist from Kampala, they began Young Christian Ambassadors Fellowship which a few years later transformed into Deliverance Church and he became the founding pastor. At Makerere University, he graduated with an honor’s degree in Literature in 1972 and was called to the Department of Literature as a Tutorial Fellow while working on his Master of Arts in Literature. During this period, he was a pastor and an evangelist, something that did not go well with the Idi Amin regime; and when he learnt of the threat on his life, he fled the country into exile where he remained for 13 years. It was during this time that he joined African Evangelistic Enterprise as a Team Member of Kenya Team.

While in exile, he joined Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, USA where he graduated with an MA in Missiology. He returned briefly to Kenya and then was called to Uganda to head the Provincial Office of Mission as the Church of Uganda launched a Decade of Evangelism. It was during this time that he got challenged about leadership in the country and the church and so resolved to return to Fuller Theological Seminary to pursue a PhD in Inter Cultural Studies, majoring in leadership.

Dr. Mung’oma also served as the Rector of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Compton and was at the same time the Headmaster of St. Timothy’s Day School, Compton, California in the USA for seven years. He also was chaplain and teacher as well as Associate Rector of St. Patrick’s Day School, Thousand Oaks, California.

While in the States, Dr. Mung’oma also worked as an insurance agent, a teacher in the public school systems and worked in many jobs such as mail delivery and taking care of old people. He came to learn that a job at whatever level must be appreciated and done excellently.

Currently, he sits on different organizational boards including being the Chairman of the Governing Board of Inzu ya Masaaba, the cultural institution of the Bamasaaba of Uganda and Kenya, and Board Chairman of Mbale Coalition Against Poverty. He is also an executive member of Mbale Municipal Development Forum.

He has an undying passion for young people and has spoken at various motivational seminars across the world and continuous to do so. His personal life mission is to Educate, Encourage and Inspire people.
